SS-31 is one of the Szeto-Schiller series of small, alternating aromatic-cationic peptides designed to cross cell membranes freely and accumulate specifically in the inner mitochondrial membrane rather than requiring a targeting sequence or carrier.

How it is understood to work

It is studied for binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid central to organizing the electron transport chain on the inner mitochondrial membrane; this interaction is proposed to stabilize cristae structure, support more efficient ATP production and reduce excess reactive oxygen species from damaged mitochondria.

Research status
